Donna has helped me decorate two rooms now. I am completely satisfied! She got me very organized and helped me make decisions. (I have a hard time with decisions). She assured me it would be great in the end no matter which decision I made. She was right. She showed me where to start and kept me focused which I needed help with also. She shopped for me, sent pictures to narrow down our shopping later. My house now represents me and feels wonderful to be in. Everyone that comes in is thoroughly impressed. They say looks like a room out of a magazine. The price was so worth it. I will use her every time decorate. She has a talent I just don't have.

I'm not sure where to begin, but to tell you that I'm extremely pleased with Donn'a decorating. She came to my house and looked around and told me she would get back with me in a couple days and we would go shopping. I loved shopping with her. We went to several stores and she picked out many different items that I would have been too scared to buy, but I had faith in her. She came to my house and started working miracles. It was so natural for her to put items together that I would have never thought about. Her style made my house look unique. One of my favorite things she created was my collage of crosses on my living room wall. I just sit on my couch at look at them along with the other decorations in my living room. Her touch made the room so warm and welcoming. Now I look forward to coming home and relaxing in my living room. Donna also put her personal touch in my kitchen. She was so good at putting different things together to make it look like "my kitchen". She asked me questions about how my family functions and then she decorated around our needs. It's nice to be in the kitchen now that it is functional and decorative.

Deer Park Client

We enjoyed working with a local Deer Park family in their beautiful home. We did makeovers on their living room, kitchen and entry. Using what they already had, we opted for a fresh paint color in the kitchen and a one evening shopping trip with our client to finish off a new fresh look. Not pictured, we purchased a beautiful new picture to go over the mantel. I need to go back and get a couple of more shots I missed. Hope you enjoy.

Taya's Room Decor

Imagine a solid white room with no window treatment, no furniture and some large boxes of all of a very sweet little girl's belonging. This was the beginning of Taya's room. Desiring to set up a new place to call home, Taya's soon to be Mom called me in for a consultation and guidance to get the show on the road. Taya knew one thing...she loved pink. So, pink it was! Going through an array of "pink" color choices, here is the outcome.

We first emailed Taya a long list of things she and she alone could work on. A growing girl has a lot of editing to do from time to time to decide what is now, yesterday and memories for tomorrow. Giving some guidance, Taya went to work sorting, organizing, decluttering and pulling our favorite items to make the room now "home" for her.

We worked to determine the best furniture arrangement and a list for Mom and Dad. We suggested a list of things needed to purchase to complete the look.

We used some of Taya's books removing the covers to expose our color scheme.

The green old quilt thrown over the chair is a favorite, hand made with Taya's name on it.

The shelves help to house some hand made sculptures done by Taya.

Dad constructed the blackboard with blackboard paint and a painted frame.

Our time was spent doing the first one hour consultation, compiling a "to do" list, checking in on the project for final instructions of placement of large items, then doing the final styling of the room using all elements.

My Mother in law's Apartment Makeover

While Mom was in Austin visiting with her son and daughter in law, she asked me to redo her apartment.

When this apartment was created, the wall was taken down between the two rooms and the new space became her living area, creating a small kitchen and a new closet area. Rethinking the space for this makeover, it just seemed to make more sense to switch the two rooms allowing the living room have so much more space. It is in the plans to make an outside entrance where her game table is now.

She is really happy with the outcome. I do not have before shots now, but here are the end results. Another "using what's you've got" makeover.

We did a few things to freshen the space: a new silk pillow for the couch, some fresh red apples for her coffee table, a fresh green plant for her living area, a chocolate for her pillow, a bamboo tray beside her on the table to house several small things, and a small stock of her favorite grocery items stocking her fridge.

Vintage Birthday Party Theme

May 31 marked the first day of celebration of my daughter, Hannah's 16th birthday. With an early end of the year school dismissal, Hannah invited 3 close school friends over for a birthday luncheon.

The Menu: We used our "decorating for the senses" recipes, some of Hannah's favorites:

Gabby's Confetti Pasta, Strawberry Green Spring Mix Salad with a homemade citrus vinaigrette dressing, lemon mint rice, cheese and crackers, home made pineapple cake with a cream cheese frosting and sweet tea.

Decor used for all party celebrations was a Vintage Theme: antique suitcase, radio, newspapers, books, jars, vintage pictures of Hannah and an antique black board. Not pictured: tree limbs in entry about 8 - 9 feet tall with vintage pictures hung with ribbons of Hannah.

The next day, Hannah invited her close church friends that also attend her high school. The table was turned to seat more people and the same menu was repeated.

Hannah's main party consisted of local family members. Twenty-five guest were in attendance.

The Menu: New Orleans Creole Gumbo, my own family recipe, steamed brown rice, prepared by Shelley, wheat french bread, iced tea, lemons, limes & orange slices, the cake and coffee.

The cake was purchased from HEB. We chose half chocolate and half white cake with a cream cheese icing and white chocolate side shavings. The picture used was one taken at Christmas time on our visit at my mother's at Christmas time, 2010.

Working With What You've Got

This is my daughter, Hannah's room. She loves the vintage look. Since our home had all been freshly painted, we have not added any accent colors yet. The colors are a toasted almond with an antique white trim. Curtains are panels and hardware from Ikea.

The newspapers were some very old papers from her Dad's keepsakes. The flowers are dried with white status. The pillows are hand made by Hannah's Grandmother with beading, lace & ribbons.

This was our last wall to work on. Rather than using the dog quote black art only on this wall, we shopped the garage and found frames, taking out all pictures in them, a stored poster art, tacked on the wall and a vintage hat Hannah received for her birthday last year.

The antique hat collection was rehung in a level straight line to form a border affect. This gave the room vintage with a contemporary flare. The window frame was a keepsake taken from my old home place once replaced with storm double pane windows. The chalk board is an antique music lined slate board once used to write music notes on.

The contemporary chair was a buy from Marshall's Home Goods. An antique fur stole from Hannah's Aunt Judy drapes across the back. Teddy enjoys the front window view.

Hannah plans to find favorite pictures to replace the old family ones in the frames, once used to decorate my office.

The top case was found in someone's trash in Newport subdivision from Crosby, Texas. A very beloved piece of mine. The bottom case belonged to Hannah's great grandmother, Bessie Madden.

The antique phone was from the basement of the first church we pastored in Brookings, South Dakota. The Paris keepsakes is from Hannah's Uncle Kenny and Aunt Missy purchased from Paris, France. Again, we used books with the theme of this section.

Hannah, loves fashion and form... she was very excited to find these in her artist aunt's attic, Aunt Judy Walston. She enjoys flaunting them with fashion inspirations designed my Hannah.

This was a very old trunk that has now been covered for the 3rd time. Fabrics purchased at Kast and covered by me.

We were thrilled when we found this beautiful rug just before moving into our new home. It was part of our color inspiration for the room. Purchased at Burlington Coat Factory. We paired it with a printed quilt and pillow sham and some throw pillows.

I had this done at Proformance, the company I do sales and marketing for.

We worked to bring a warm welcoming entry for the parents, keeping a whimsical feel to anticipate a wonderful relaxing and fun place to be.

Once entering past the enameled black French doors, students are greeted with colorful walls and creative flooring. The COTC kids and parents are "in love" with all of the fresh changes.

One Year Anniversary of Our Box Lunch Deliveries

On February 14, 2010, I posted my first menu for our newest endeavor, box lunch deliveries.

Decorating for the Senses was born after the encouragement of my family members to utilize my talents through a business. Through the years, I have done home decor, visual merchandising & organizing. I love decorating and I love to make people feel the warm feeling of high self worth when I serve them. When I decorate or organize, I love leaving their homes with a sense of order and beauty.

Little did I know that the catering segment of my business would take off first. I know it is because people do not decorate everyday but eating is something we think about and do continuously. I knew to launch my catering segment of my business, people just needed "a taste" of what I do.

On my birthday, a little over a year ago now, I met Charles, an ex pastry chef of Brennens' in Shreveport, La. I was shopping at Central Market, Westheimer where he now worked with the floral department. I shared to him what I was working on with my new business. A few days later I came up with an idea of a lunch for corporate offices, shared the idea with Charles, and he helped me to crystallize the idea of what is now my box lunches.

Now serving 3 areas of South Houston three days a week, our lunches also serve corporate lunch meetings, school staffs and occasional evening staff meetings.

We are striving to keep our price at $7. We now have an online payment system for those choosing to pay with credit.

This was a fun party to work with. My host gave her husband a 50th birthday party. Decorating for the Senses did the decor and a big chunk of the catering.

Color Scheme: Ivory, red

Theme: Phantom of the Opera

Menu: Holiday Green Salad with Pomegranate Vinaigrette Dressing

Terragon Chicken Salad with green grapes or cranberries, breads

Fruit tray with a creamy brown sugar sauce

Punch upon arrival with 3 cheese for slicing, flatbread/crackers, olive mix, pickles

This Thanksgiving week, we will not be serving our normal boxed lunch deliveries due to the holiday. We will be delivering pre-ordered desserts from our Thanksgiving Bake Sale. We hope you enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving week.

New Orleans Creole Chicken Sausage Gumbo

As a native New Orleans resident, my family adopted a prize winning recipe of Creole New Orleans Gumbo. When launching my business, I have adopted this recipe as my own and have served to many. Pictured here is me using our church kitchen to make a huge amount of gumbo for my lunches.

New Orleans Creole Chicken Sausage Gumbo

We use chicken breast and a lean sausage, a small amount of okra, the seasonings and a tomato base.

Wyle Craft Event

On November 10, '10, we contributed to Wyle's Annual Fall Craft Event for Wyle (Nasa) employees. For the details, view our blog entry for this event.

Home Decor for a Recent Client

This beautiful home has now had a facelift.

Shelley decided to go with a wood look of ceramic tile in her formal dining room for her large family. I wanted to create a warm cozy setting that would draw you into the room, keeping the old world charm Shelley loved. Shopping with my client, we pulled together the small couch, picture, lamp, rug and accessories. It is important to have input of the home owner to ensure a loved room.

The wall colors are a rich red and a creamy buttery golden yellow. The flooring is a deep brown.

Over the table is a gorgeous chandelier Shelley found online along with a matching hanging fixture in her entry.

The Season To Decorate

I love the cool Fall mornings now and the early evenings when the sun is going down. A small pause in my day with a good cup of coffee with my husband always helps my body and soul to recharge and reflect on days gone by and dreams of tomorrow.

I love the Fall colors and my most favorite season of all that this time of year promises is just around the corner.

Decorating for the Senses is at the present helping with an open house showcasing a recent room makeover. The celebrations of the season will usher in my client's guest.

Next week, we will unveil the makings of an upscale corporate decor and catering event in a Clear Lake Nasa contractor company. We will look forward to sharing pics of these special events.
